Piano Action Regulation
The piano action is the mechanical part of the piano that converts the motion fingers on the keys to forward motion of the hammers towards the strings. There are over 8,000 moving parts in the piano action and each note in an upright piano has over 25 points of adjustment; a grand piano has around 35 (that is over 3,000 adjustments for the entire grand piano).
The touch of the piano and the amount of control a player has over the instrument determines the regulation of the piano action. All piano regulation procedures are linked through one another, that is, if you change one, another may be affected. All pianos require periodic regulation and it is up to you and your piano technician to decide how frequently your piano needs action regulation.
Regulation should be done by a skilled, qualified technician and should be checked occasionally throughout the life of the piano.
